Super Power:

If I had to pick a superpower that matches my personality best, I would choose the ability to teleport. I think that this superpower is the best because no matter what situation you’re in you will be able to easily get out of it by traveling somewhere else. This superpower will prevent chaos on earth because whenever there is a disaster the proper authorities would be able to arrive at the scene in no time. An example is if there was a fire, firefighters would be able to quickly and effectively get to the people who need help on time and there would be little to no casualties. Being able to teleport also grants people more time in terms of not needing to worry about making it to a specific location on time. I know that in my case, especially waking up and getting ready for college in the morning, I’ve wished that I lived closer so I wouldn’t have to wake up so early and with this power, my wishes would be granted.

Rhetorical Analysis of Scientific Advertisement:

  1. This ad shows an ice cream cone that is melting but the important detail is how the ice cream in the cone isn’t really ice cream, it’s the earth that’s being melted. The point of this ad was to bring awareness to global warming.

  2. The purpose of the ad is to inform people about climate change and what’s happening to earth. Specifically it’s trying to show how the temperatures are slowly rising and this is symbolized by the ice cream or “earth” being melted.

  3. The argument of the ad is that if we don’t do anything to slow down global warming and make a change soon, the earth will be destroyed and there will be no future for our planet.

  4. The author is someone that has a background in environmental issues and who is very passionate about drawing attention to global warming and educating others on the topic.

  5. The audience would essentially be those that are aware of global warming and can at least acknowledge that it’s an issue. If people didn’t know about global warming, this ad might be harder to decipher especially since it appears to be so simple when it’s portraying so much.

  6. This ad has a very threatening and anxious tone.

  7. Style wise, there is a dark background with a melting ice cream cone. There is also text at the bottom that simply explains how the picture is supposed to represent global warming.

  8. The ad uses one image that powerfully gets the message across along with a few lines of text that explain the meaning of the image.

I think this ad is very effective in bringing awareness to global warming because it creates a sense of urgency through the melting ice cream cone. Looking at the ad not only does the melting ice cream cone create powerful imagery about the earth melting in a literal sense, but it also gives off an ominous feeling and a sense of dread due to the ice cream cone being the only visual component that’s surrounded by a dark background. I mentioned before how the ad gave off a threatening tone and you can see this through the ice cream being melted over the sides and dripping everywhere creating this feeling that there isn’t enough time to save it from falling on the ground and melting completely. Since the earth is being represented as the ice cream you have this same feeling where it seems like there isn’t enough time to reverse the effects of global warming.

Sounding Like a Scientist:

1) Passive voice is preferred in scientific writing so your audience can pay attention to what you are writing about and the research that you are conducting rather than them focusing on you, the researcher. An example of a passive voice that is used in the text is: “ the study was approved by the ethics committee.’

2)

  • Avoid contractions
  • Avoid colloquialisms and cliches
  • Remember the context of whatever you are writing about

3) I definitely need to work on excluding contractions such as didn’t and don’t from my writing because I am so used to using those forms of certain words instead of just writing them out, I even caught myself doing it while writing this. In the future I just need to do a better job at re-reading anything that I have written and keeping an eye out for words like that and contemplating what would sound more professional.
